And log jams...
And log jams...

The 18th Susquehanna Sojourn will have us starting at the top again as last year we reached the bay.

New this year is Geocaching along the river. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt that is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a GPS unit. “Caches” of treasure will be hidden along the Sojourn trail with the coordinates only known by Sojourners.

The caches themselves are small boxes containing an item. The item can be anything from a log book, a small plastic toy, or a message. Other items are more sophisticated like traceable items. Those items have a life of their own. They sometimes come with instructions relayed through a website that tells you where the item is supposed to end up, or information about the person or group that placed them in the cache.

We will have some traceable items for the Sojourn, so that cachers after we leave can read up about the 2008 Susquehanna Sojourn.

A few rules:

1. Take an item from the cache

2. Leave something in the cache

3. Write a note in the logbook

Our June 15th kick-off will be in the City of Corning at the headwaters of the Chemung River, where participants will have a day to explore this thriving city full of arts, antiques, museums and, of course, Corning and Steuben Glass. Free admission to the Rockwell Museam of Western Art, which will be host to Ansel Adams and Georgia O'Keefe exhibits during the Sojourn Week! We’ll meet later near the Chemung River for a community dinner, some entertainment and to finally to rest under the stars and fairy-like flitterings of mayflies.

Promptly at 9 a.m. Monday morning, canoes and kayaks will launch, paddling downstream to another upstate New York urban center: Elmira. In Elmira, we’ll camp out at the Grove Street close to the site of the infamous Elmira Civil War Prison Camp and an access point on the Chemung River Basin Water Trail. In the evening, we plan a tour of Victorian Homes in the Near Westside Historic District.

These are only the first two stops on the 2008 Susquehanna Sojourn. As we pass the New York-Pennsylvania border leaving Elmira we’ll have plenty more of beautiful river, people and towns to explore. This year’s theme, River Towns, River People, will take us through two cities and several interesting rural towns.

It’s a river trip replete with aquatic wonders and natural beauty but it’s also a cultural trip, complete with visits to museums, restaurants and small town-shops and people that are accessible from the river.

Downstream, we'll take out in downtown Towanda to discover wonderful riverside restaurants and shops. Once back on the river, we’ll gawk at Standing Stone, a 25-foot high, 13.5 foot wide monolith of displaced stone emerging from the water near Towanda. At French Azilum, we’ll camp in the same place where exiled French aristocrats safely laid their heads in 1793 after escaping the guillotines of the French revolution.

This trip follows two of the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network Regions that have official water trial guides available. The Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network connects people with the Bay’s special places through a system of parks, refuges, museums, historic communities and water trails. We’ll be following two of those water trails: The Chemung River Basin Water Trail and the Susquehanna River Water Trail-North.

2008 Susquehanna Sojourn: The Susquehanna Sojourn is an educational and awareness-raising event that involves a group of canoeists paddling a segment of the Susquehanna River, camping on her shores and interacting with local towns and villages. The Susquehanna River is the largest tributary and provides almost half of the freshwater to the Chesapeake Bay.

Over the course of the Sojourn, families, scouts and individuals partner with local residents in river-related service projects and activities The Sojourn receives prominent media coverage and is a unique and powerful tool for promoting environmental stewardship and inspiring conservation of our natural resources. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay founded the Susquehanna Sojourn 18 years ago, starting at the beginning: the headwaters of the river at Cooperstown. Each year, Sojourners paddle a different segment of the river until we make it the Chesapeake Bay. In 2008, we return to the Corning, NY headwaters of the Chemung River and paddle downstream to the North Branch of the Susquehanna.
