Project Clean Stream is an annual April stream clean up held in Central and Eastern Maryland. Thank you and congratulations to all of our hard-working 2009 Project Clean Stream volunteers! Project Clean Stream efforts were extended to one site in Accomac, VA and Sussex County, DE. Results from 156 clean-ups sites included 2,638 volunteers who cleaned-up more than 320,310 pounds of trash, making 2009 our most successful clean-up yet!

Interesting items found include a toboggan, a wooden foot bridge, a skate board ramp, a NO DUMPING sign, a motorized scooter, a terrarium, inflated exercise ball, an exercise bench, post office crates, a small compressor, a dishwasher and hundreds of tires.

Project Clean Stream 2010 is slated for the first Saturday in April.

History: Since its inception in the Jones Falls watershed (by Irvine Nature Center) over 30 years ago, this annual event has grown from a local trash pick up to encompass about 100 sites around Maryland. New sites are brought on each year as we expand. Partners include local watershed associations, who help coordinate volunteers and sites in their region, and local government staff, who coordinate trash removal by providing dumpsters or curb-side pickup. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay acts as umbrella coordiantor, ordering supplies, helping to recruit volunteers, staging site captain meetings, arranging for trash pick-up, and filling in any gaps where needed.
