Natural stream channel design is a stream restoration method that uses intense data collection, modeling techniques, and stable or reference stream channels in the design of ideal channel configurations. Because this approach is relatively new in the field of stream restoration, these guidelines were written to provide a common process for planning, designing, and evaluating natural stream channel restoration projects. Though written for professionals involved in stream restoration design, construction, and permitting, the guidelines can be helpful to watershed organizations that contract work of this nature to private consultants and government agencies. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay worked with the Pennsylvania Keystone Stream Team in preparing this document.
